GREGORY KONDOS
(1923 - 2021)
Gregory Kondos is celebrated for his bold, modernist landscape paintings and vibrant, colorful style. His works often feature simple designs, gently flowing rhythms, and large areas of solid color. Solitude is an often repeated theme, with paintings that frequently include single trees, boats, or buildings surrounded by vast planes of empty space. His clean, uncomplicated compositions depict such iconic locations as the California coastline, the rocky mountains of Yosemite, the deserts of the Southwestern U.S., and the cliffs of Greece, often with the inclusion of broad, blue skies. While his paintings are rich in color and movement, they somehow manage to simultaneously exude quietness, serenity and tranquility, a remarkable combination created by a uniquely talented and influential artist.
His work was often inspired by Wayne Thiebaud, and he had a long successful career as an artist and teacher in Sacramento. The Kondos gallery at Sacramento City College is named in his honor. In 1995, he was elected to the National Academy of Design in New York. He passed away in Sacramento in March 2021 and will be remembered for his unusual, vivid multicolored paintings.
