William Wendt (1865-1946)

William Wendt, a native of Germany, is often referred to as “the dean of Southern California landscape painters.” Though he did study briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago, Wendt was largely self-taught. Following several trips to California with his friend Gardner Symons, Wendt moved to Los Angeles in 1906. Five years later, he was the co-founder and first president of the California Art Club. Wendt is remembered not only as one of the finest of the Early California Impressionists, but also as a teacher and mentor to a generation of early artists.
