 |  | Stanton MacDonald-Wright (1890-1973)Stanton MacDonald-Wright was born in Charlottesville, North Carolin in 1890. Having run away from home, MacDonald-Wright arrived in Los Angeles in 1901. Following studies there at the Art Students League, he left for further instruction at the Sorbonne and Academies Julian, Colarossi, and Beaux Arts in Paris. Exhibiting in Paris and Munich, he was the originator of a style experimenting with color and form, which he termed “Synchronism.” He continued with this style in Europe and New York until 1919 when he returned to the Los Angeles area in 1919. He served as the Director of the Art Students League from 1923-30 and oversaw the WPA arts program in the western U.S. during the Depression. In California, MacDonald-Wright turned away from Synchronism to focus on Asian aesthetics, a subject he taught at UCLA. Upon retirement he divided his time between Japan and Los Angeles, where he died in 1973.
