Samuel Marsden Brookes (1816-1892)

Samuel Marsden Brookes was born in Middlesex, England in 1816 and immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1833. Settling in Chicago, Brookes was a self-taught artist. Moving to San Francisco around 1862, Brookes was a founding member of the Bohemian Club and the San Francisco Art Association. Sharing a studio with Edwin Deakin, Brookes enjoyed tremendous success in his lifetime both as an artist and teacher. He achieved national fame for his meticulous still-lifes which were very popular among the wealthiest San Franciscans. Samuel Marsden Brookes died in San Francisco in 1892.
