 |  | Lucia Mathews (1870-1945)Lucia Mathews was born in San Francisco in 1870, where she attended the Mark Hopkins Institute under her future husband, Arthur Mathews. Lucia and Arthur Mathews would be one of the most influential couples in the San Francisco art scene. Following Arthur Mathews’ retirement from his post as Director of the San Francisco School of Design in 1906, the coupled founded the Mathews Furniture shop, creating the California Decorative Style for which they are now famous. A blend of oriental design, Arts & Crafts, Beaux Arts, and Tonalism, their highly individualized works much sought today.
