Jules Tavernier (1844-1889)

Jules Tavernier was born in Paris, France in 1844 where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and exhibited to acclaim at the prestigious Salon. In 1873 Tavernier immigrated to the U.S., where he sketched his way across the country as an illustrator for Harper’s Weekly. By 1874, He divided his time between San Francisco and Monterey until 1884, when he fled his debts and embarked for Hawaii to specialize in moody nocturnes of active volcanoes. His works there were so popular there, he eventually became the official painter to the king.
