Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953)

Joseph Henry Sharp was born in Bridgeport, Ohio in 1859. Sharp lost his hearing at the age of 14, prompting him to leave public school to attend Cincinnati Academy of Art. Further study followed during three separate trips to Antwerp, Munich and Paris. Sharp is remembered as one of the first white artists to paint in Taos, having arrived in 1893. A lifelong fascination with Native Americans was indulged when President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned Sharp to paint portraits of some 200 Native American survivors of Custerís battle site, Little Big Horn.
