Grant Wood (1892-1942)

Born in Anamosa, Iowa in 1892 Wood is remembered as one of the foremost Regionalist painters in America. Wood's studies were quite varied as he spent time at the Minneapolis School of Design and Handicraft and Normal Art, Iowa State University, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Academie Julien in Paris. In 1932, Wood co-founded the short-lived Stone City Art Colony and Art School. That same year he was selected to serve as director of the Public Works Art Project in Iowa. In 1930 Wood is said to have created his first major landscape painting, "Stone City" and from that time on, Wood's works retained a near-na´ve treatment of subject that was often accompanied with a mildly satiric humor.
