Percy Gray

Gilbert Munger (1837-1903)

Gilbert Munger was born in Madison, Connecticut in 1837. Munger began work as an engraver at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. at the young age of 14. Following service in the Civil War, Munger moved to San Francisco where he traveled and painted in Carmel and Yosemite. From 1876-1893, Munger lived in Europe where he had a studio Barbizon, France. His works from this time show the influence of Corot in their moody palette and loose brush strokes. Though very successful in Europe, he returned to the U.S. and began a slow, downward spriral into poverty, illness and obscurity. Munger never achieved the success he earned while overseas and became to ill to return there. He died penniless and almost unkown in Washington, D.C.
