Gene Kloss (1903-1996)

Gene Kloss was born in Oakland, California in 1903. She attended the University of California at Berkeley where she was first introduced to the printmaking process for which she is best remembered. After marrying Phillip Kloss in 1925, Gene and her husband divided their time between Berkeley and Taos, New Mexico. Though an accomplished oil and watercolor artist, Klossí legacy is in her printmaking. Throughout her life Kloss experimented with the copper-plate printing press, at times developing her own very unique and complex tones of shading. Kloss produced over 600 individual plates depicting the California landscape, and Native American imagery.
